The man had messaged her every day this week, asking if she wanted to grab dinner. Each time, she’d gently turned him down. She sighed and dropped her cell into her bag. She’d text him back later.

Opening the door and exiting the building, she inhaled the fresh mountain air and spied Finn’s truck. Like usual, he was in the driver’s seat, but he wasn’t looking out his window. His gaze was directed downward. What was he looking at? Her throat thickened with emotion, recalling how Grant had been glued to his phone while she walked down the aisle. She banished the thought. This was not her wedding day. And Finn Starrycard was most certainly not her fiancé.

“Bye, Miss Higgins,” a little boy from her class called out of a passing car’s window.

She waved as he went by, then looked up and found Finn watching her. For a fraction of a second, a charged expectancy pulsed between them like they were on the cusp of something that left her breathless.

And then it disappeared.

He broke their connection, hopped out of the truck, and slipped his wallet into his pocket. Going through the motions, he took her bag and helped her into the passenger seat.

He got in, fired up the engine, and shifted into drive. This is when he’d usually rest his hand on her knee and make slow circles with his thumb—and the reason she loved wearing dresses and skirts. The contact sent a delicious charge through her body she’d come to crave. But his hands remained at ten and two, gripping the wheel like he had a vendetta against it. They drove out of town, neither saying a word. The smoothly paved road turned to crunchy gravel as they wound their way up the mountain.

Minutes ticked by, and still, the man wouldn’t even look at her. They turned onto Starryview Lane. His drive came into view, and she couldn’t take the silence.

“This was not the start to the weekend I was expecting,” she said with a nervous laugh, hating the shake in her voice.

Finn didn’t reply. Instead, a muscle ticked on his jaw. He jerked the wheel to the right like he’d been possessed. The truck protested with an abrasive screech. Loose gravel scattered across the road as he slammed the vehicle into park.

She shrieked and braced herself.

Had he lost his mind? Was he trying to get them killed?
